The mosque of Mahmut aga Kokonoz is located in the eastern part of the city center of Tirana. It is a beautiful mosque of the "mehalla mosque" (neighborhood) type. Today, unlike before, it is called the New Market Mosque, since with the demolition of the Old Market of Tirana, the New Market was built next to this mosque. The Kokonoz mosque, together with the Tabake mosque, is one of the oldest (remaining) mosques in the city of Tirana. After these two mosques comes the mosque of Et'hem Beu. The well-known researcher Zija Shkodra in his book "Albanian City during the National Renaissance" says that the Kokonoz mosque was built there at the end of the century. XVIII. However, he does not support this with arguments to make it as reliable as possible. While the other well-known researcher Kristo Frashëri in the book "Historia e Tirana", vol. I, after showing that the construction of the mosque belongs to the end of the 18th century, says that this mosque no longer exists. In fact, this statement is strange since it is well known that the mosque was closed in 1967, but was not demolished, it was turned into a tobacco warehouse. At the beginning of the 90s, it was reopened and resumed religious activity. The statement of researcher Kristo Frashëri should be divided into two parts; in the first part where it says that the mosque was built during the c. XVIII and in the second part where it says that the mosque no longer exists. Regarding the first part, we will examine it below, while the second part of the statement is simply a lack of information on his part, since the mosque continues to exist even today.
